The Taniwha is back again for 2016, and is brought to you by Total Sport, specialists in delivering "great events in stunning locations" - and there are not too many places more stunning than this we can tell you.

You're in for a journey. We have compiled some
course videos of this stunning journey along the mighty Waikato River, either on foot or on your mountain bike.

Below is all the information you will need to ensure you arrive at the right place, at the right time, and head off in the right direction; and have an awesome time in the process...!

Event Registration

Event registration will be held on Friday 4th November at the super impressive South Waikato Sport and Events Centre. Registration will be open from 4pm to 9pm and is compulsory for all participants to collect their race number, timing transponder and goodie bag. There will also be a number of the events sponsors set-up at this registration offering ‘event specials'. The Sport and Event's Centre is located in Tokoroa on the corner of Mossop Road and SH1.

If you have booked a bus to the start line for you and your bike, you must register on the Friday and drop off your bike.

If you are unable to make it for Friday registration, there will also be registration's set up at each of the start lines from an hour and a half before your race start time. However we do ask anyone that can make it to the Friday registration to do so, this way you have nothing to do on event morning other than get yourself ready and psyched-up for your day ahead!

Event Transport

For all of you that require transport for yourselves from the finish line at Whakamaru Christian Camp to your start line there is a bus option available. This is optional and is designed for people that don't have ‘support crews' with them to drop them at their start point in the morning. There is an additional cost that comes with booking the transport option, and this can be booked when entering your chosen event option, alternatively the bus can be booked at a later date if you are un-sure at this stage whether or not you will require it.

PLEASE NOTE: If you are doing one of the mountain biking events and are booking the optional event transport to your start line you will have to attend the Friday registration. You will drop off your bike on the Friday when you register, and then on Saturday morning you will park your car at the finish area, get on a bus (with your gear, helmet, shoes... etc...)and be taken to your start line, your bike will be waiting for you there.

Prizegiving and lunch


We have decide to change the format slightly this year and make the most of our stunning event base! So we are going to have the prize giving at the event base and have it in the afternoon rather than the evening.

The prizegiving will kick off at 3:30pm with merit prizes and trophies being awarded to over-all race winners for each of the race options, with age group winners receiving name recognition on our honors board, a certificate and discount voucher to next years Loaded Taniwha event. There will also be a number of great spot prizes giving away throughout the prize giving (must attend prize giving to be in the draw for these! Unless you are still out on the course, in which case we will keep it for you).

With this new format to do day we hope many of you will hang around, get some lunch and enjoy the day until it's prize giving time!

Note: Marathon and Ultra-Marathon participants will also receive finish medals at the finish line.


This year the crew at Mi Camp Whakamura are going to be serving up a delicious lunch option at the event base for you to enjoy after a hard morning on the trails!
For only $20 your lunch includes: (Child lunches for under 14’s also available with one lunch option - $14).

The choice of two of the following four options:
•    Fish and Chips
•    Lamb Curry
•    Teriyaki Chicken Salad
•    Caesar Salad
•    (vegetarian options also available)

Also included is a delicious dessert, fresh fruit platter and a drink (Beer, cider or Juice). Trust me, we’ve sampled this new lunch option and it is delicious!

Lunch will be served at 12pm, 2pm and 4pm so no matter what time you plan on finishing your adventure we will have the good stuff waiting for you!

Note that lunch must be booked by Wednesday 2nd November - there will be very minimal CASH SALES on the day! So please pre-book to avoid disappointment.

What’s better than staying on an Island the night before and after your event!? Well how about if that same Island is where the event base is located and where all the event bases leave from on event morning! That's right, this year MiCamp Whakamaru is available for accommodation over event weekend!


This is Dorn/bunk style accommodation at the stunning event base, shared toilets and cooking facilities, no bedding provided. Rooms are strictly limited and on a first come first served bases. The prices are below (for a two night stay – Friday and Saturday, there is no difference in price if you only require for one night) and if you would like to book one of these rooms please do so here (link to come very shortly!). Limited camping sites are also available.

2 person dorm - $80

4 person dorm - $120

  • 10% off event entry fees (Minimum of 10 people per team)

  • Ezy-Up Tent (3mx3m) at a designated site, tables and chairs at the event base. Hireage and set-up/pack down - $250

Once you are ready, contact Kezia from Total Sport - kezia@totalsport.co.nz 

If you would like to all pay together we will send you a special entry code which each team member will use to enter themselves online into their chosen event at no cost. Total Sport will then invoice you for the full team amount.

If you would like to pay for yourselves as you enter like you normally would, will send you a discount code which each team member will use to redeem the 10% discount


Terms & conditions:

Team entries must be received 2 weeks before event. You will be invoiced by Total Sport on this date - Payment must be received 1 week before event - A $200 + GST admin fee will be incurred if; The full invoice is not paid in one amount - There are less than 10 people in your team/group - The invoice is not paid 1 week before event.
